How to Grow Your Home Care Agency in Georgia

How to Grow Your Home Care Agency in Georgia

Georgia is a great place to run a home care agency right now. More people are getting older. Medicaid keeps paying for care at home. And more families want care at home instead of a nursing home.

That means there is a big chance to grow. Maybe you want 10 more clients. Maybe you want a second office. Either way, these five steps will get you there.

1. Build a referral network

Word-of-mouth is nice. But it won’t grow your agency on its own. You need to know the people who talk to your future clients every day.

In Georgia, the best referral sources are:

  • Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) — Georgia has 12 of them. They are the front door for CCSP. Families trust them. Most agencies know AAAs exist. Few know how to get referrals from them. We wrote a full blog on that: Area Agencies on Aging: What Every Georgia Home Care Agency Needs to Know.
  • CCSP and SOURCE care coordinators — They pick which agency gets the call when a member needs care. Make sure they know your name, where you work, and how many clients you can take.
  • Hospital discharge planners — When a patient goes home and needs care, this person picks who to call. Be the agency they already know.
  • Nursing homes (SNFs) — People leaving nursing homes often need home care. Get on their list.
  • VA Community Care Network — If you serve veterans, this is a referral source most Georgia agencies never use.

The secret is to keep showing up. Drop off your cards. Say thank you when a referral comes in. Check in often, not just when you need clients.

2. Make sure people can find you online

Before a family calls you, they Google you. If you don’t show up or your page looks old, they call someone else.

You don’t need a fancy website. You just need the basics.

Start with your Google Business Profile. It’s free. It shows up when someone searches “home care near me.” Check that your name, phone number, address, and hours are right. Add photos. And ask happy clients and families to leave reviews. Reviews are the first thing families look at.

Your website needs four things: what services you offer, what counties or cities you serve, a phone number that’s easy to see, and something that builds trust, like how long you’ve been open or why you started your agency.

Use local words on your website. Phrases like “home care in Atlanta” or “Georgia Medicaid home care” help Google show your agency to people near you.

Don’t overthink it. Small fixes here bring in real calls.

3. Get more from Georgia’s Medicaid waivers

Georgia’s waiver programs are where the growth is. Most agencies only bill for a small part of what they could.

  • CCSP and SOURCE — For older adults and people with disabilities who want to stay home. If you’re only in one, adding the other is the fastest way to get more clients.
  • GAPP — In-home nursing and personal care for medically fragile kids. This group needs a lot of help and has few providers.
  • ICWP — For adults with severe physical disabilities or traumatic brain injuries. This waiver helps them live at home instead of a facility, and it’s one that most agencies overlook.
  • NOW and COMP — For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These waivers cover many services beyond personal care.

Two blogs that can help: our complete guide to Georgia’s Medicaid waiver programs shows who qualifies and how to enroll. And our guide on pairing waivers with services shows how to add new services to what you already have — money most agencies leave on the table.

One more thing: fix your billing. Denied and unbilled claims add up fast. Cleaning them up grows your revenue without adding a single client. And remember, Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) is required for Georgia Medicaid personal care. Stay on top of it. It protects everything else.

4. Use the right software

You can have great referrals and a great name. But if your office is a mess, growth will break you.

Most agencies that can’t grow have the same problems. Schedules that fall apart. Caregivers texting from five different threads. Billing done by hand in spreadsheets no one trusts.

The right home care software fixes this. Look for one that has:

  • Smart scheduling — the right caregiver with the right client, with fewer gaps
  • Caregiver management — one place for credentials, availability, and messages
  • Built-in billing — made for Georgia Medicaid and waiver claims, where mistakes cost money
  • EVV included — so compliance just happens on its own

When things run smoothly, you can take more clients, your staff feels less stress, and you can focus on growing instead of putting out fires.

5. Hire and keep good caregivers

You can’t grow if you don’t have caregivers to send. This is the growth problem most owners miss, and Georgia has the same caregiver shortage as everywhere else.

The good news: keeping caregivers is where you can win. Caregivers quit for the same reasons every time. Schedules that change all the time. No one answers their questions. No one says thank you.

You don’t have to pay the most. You just have to fix these things:

  • Steady schedules — Caregivers plan their lives around their hours. Surprises make them quit.
  • Clear communication — They should never have to chase you for answers.
  • Good matches — When a caregiver and client fit well, both stay longer.

The fastest-growing agencies aren’t the highest-paying ones. They’re the ones where caregivers like to work and tell their friends.

Ready to grow?

Growing in Georgia doesn’t take a big marketing budget. Show up for your referral partners. Enroll in the waivers your clients use. Keep your billing clean. Give care families talk about. Do that, and the clients will come.
